The Lactation Education Specialist serves as a member of the health care team with advanced study and training in the physiology and management of lactation. The Lactation Education Specialist provides support and education to breastfeeding families, staff and other health care providers in all areas of lactation management. The overall goal of the Lactation Education Specialist, is to enable mothers and families to make informed infant feeding choices, initiate and maintain lactation, overcome obstacles, prevent premature weaning and enhance maternal role satisfaction.
The Lactation Specialist is accountable to the Director of Comprehensive Family Services.
The duties described herein are minimum standards and may be modified to meet the changing needs of the patient and WestCare Health System at any time.
Qualifications:
Current certification as a Breastfeeding Specialist
Degree in health related field is preferred.
Current BLS
Obtain IBLCC certification within 12 months of hire.
Obtain NRP within 6 months of hire
The above certifications must be maintained in order to work. There are no grace periods.
Must be a self-motivator, autonomous and have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift and move at least 50 pounds.
Ability to see colors, see at least 1 mm squares.
Ability to hear and distinguish heart, lung, and bowel sounds.
Ability to reach overhead.
Ability to remain calm, continue to function effectively and develop priorities during stressful situations.
Ability to communicate effectively using written and verbal media.
Ability to move and operate equipment and carry supplies.
Ability to sit, stand or walk for extended periods of time.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Potential exposure to patients who may be physically or verbally abusive.
Potential exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials.
This position may require the use of personal protective equipment during several patient and equipment related activities.
Occasionally exposed to noise and unpleasant odors.
Often works long hours, may participate in the call schedule (where applicable) which requires working during the evening and night hours as required.
Potential to work/collaborate with outside agencies (i.e. law enforcement, REACH, healthcare facilities) and will demonstrate professional conduct during this contact.
For HR Use:Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
